The Belmar Five Mile Run brought out yet again a wave of nostalgia with it. It took me back when the pace was slower and we had the chance to enjoy the beauty of slow Saturday morning. Within that easy pace you had the hustle and bustle of 5000 plus people milling around early enough in the morning, some preparing for the five-mile run. Others settling to be spectators and others ditching the run all together and heading for the beach.
It was a hot sunny day and it didn’t matter that it was almost 80 degrees already by 7:30. No reprieve from the sun and the runners were at the starting line ready for the 8:30 start. From my vantage point I was able to observe parents walking around with their children, others were biking with them, while others were struggling with a puppy… two or three. There was the peacefulness in the air from being at the beach.
At 8:30 on the dot wheelers took off and right on their wheels, the runners took off. Literally a wave of people passing by. Once the crowed passed there were some stragglers rushing to register and join the group. And then, there was the calm again. People were actually enjoying the morning.
The fire department opened the fire hydrant and attached an industrial sprinkler for the all to enjoy, while hoping it would bring some relief from the heat. You had children running through it as well as puppies.
Once the runners started coming through the finish line, it was the time where many took the advantage of the sprinklers to cool off. I was later told that it was a rough run this year with the early morning heat…
